Ban Righ Centre presents the Noon Hour Speaker
Series. Was Adam a Madam: A Re-reading of Creation with Howard Adelman:
Director of Jewish Studies Program at Queen’s. Much of western culture
has based fundamental views of men and women on the story of Creation in
the book of Genesis. An understanding of a sequence of Creation inspires
a hierarchy of genders which continues to mediate social roles. The biblical
narrative itself, however, is contradictory and can as easily be read in
different ways that also privilege the Creation of women over men and that
might support changes in social relations once considered divine. Ban Righ
