The Museum of Health Care presents KGHistory for Kids! Suitable for ages 6-12, this 30-minute outdoor memory and mapping activity is a fun way for children to learn about the exciting history of Kingston General Hospital. This eye-opening scavenger hunt includes revelations of plagues, politicians, prisoners, doctors, new immigrants, a nobleman and nurses, and spans nearly 100 years! Combining education, entertainment and exercise, the activity takes place mostly outside, on the picturesque grounds of KGH. Children also peek inside some buildings of two National Historic Sites, including the first parliament building of the United Province of Canada and the only remaining Victorian-era operating ampitheatre in the entire country. Working from an activity sheet, kids test their visual observation and chart their course on a map. The activity begins at the Museum of Health Care in the Ann Baillie Building at 32 George Street. The Museum of Health Care’s new indoor wheelchair-accessible tour offers an intriguing account of the shocking, odd, and amazing history of medicine and health care in Canada. From amputations and autopsies to smallpox and syphilis, you’re sure to be astounded. Learn about a time when a bottle of whisky was the only anesthetic available, and people with tuberculosis were thought to be vampires. Don’t believe it? Come see it for yourself. This exhibit tour provides a unique in depth look at disease and pathology, medical treatment and discovery, and the role of volunteers: three very different but monumentally significant aspects of health and heath care. Pandemics, politics, & prisoners-of-war – Kingston’s history as you’ve never heard it before! Learn all about the fascinating history of the Kingston General Hospital National Historic Site through the lens of 19th-century medicine. From the site of the first seat of The United Province of Canada, to a charity hospital with a staff of two, to the Christmas fire of 1897 learn the fascinating story of the tumultuous early years of the Kingston General Hospital. Ban Righ Fundraiser hosted by the Domino Theatre "Mambo Italiano" by Steve Galluccio/directed by Ken Weston on Wednesday, June 3rd at 8pm at the Baby Grand Theatre, upstairs at the Grand Theatre, 218 Princess Street - Kingston, Ontario. (Mature Content) Two mid-thirties men are in a closeted, committed relationship. A sister of one of them convinces him to "come out" to his Italian parents. His mate wants the relationship kept from his widowed mother, but his partner's mother tells her the situation. Often compared to a gay My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Mambo Italiano is about the dynamics of family, the spaces between the old and new worlds and grasping the resonant codes in what is said and what is meant in ordinary speech. Cycle Week for June 3rd is the Kingston Velo Club Roll-in Breakfast for communter cyclists, Princess & Clergy Street (7:00am - 9:00am) and Wolfe Island Ride (5:00pm, departing from Wolfe Island ferry dock). Communter cyclists are invited to stop by the intersection of Princess and Clergy Streets for a free breakfast hosted by the KVC. Cyclepath will be on site to provide free bicycle checks. In the evening, a beautiful 17km ride across Wolfe Island will take place. Participants should meet at the Wolfe Island ferry dock to take the 5:00pm ferry across. The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is a celebration of survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. Teams of 10 people participate in an overnight non-competitive relay, taking turns walking, running or strolling around a track. Relay For Life Kingston will be held June 5, 2009 from 7pm to 7am at the Royal Military College. Cycle Week for June 7th is a City Scavenger Hunt, BBQ and Musical Performance, Macdonald Park. Scavenger Hunt Registration- 1:30pm - 2:00pm. Scavenger Hunt- 2:00pm (Cost: $25/group of two or family). BBQ and Musical Performance- 4:00pm. Our final day of Cycling Week will be jam-packed with fun! A city-wide scavenger hunt to be done by bicycle will begin and end at Macdonald Park, giving participants the opportunity to win great prizes and help Cycle Kingston to raise money for cycling education programs. The adult students with intellectual disabilities from H'art School will be showing an art exhibit resulting from their most recent project called The Perfect Day at The Seniors Centre located at 56 Francis St. (off Mowat Ave.) from June 9th until July 2nd.  The Centre is open from 8:30am-4:30pm.  H'art School is a non-profit charitable organization committed to helping adults with intellectual disabilities reach their highest potential through arts and education. Kingston's fourth annual TOMMFest (Tristin Osborne Memorial Music Festival) takes place June 12-14 at Lake Ontario Park. This country and bluegrass music festival takes place over three nights, with proceeds going to a learning-disabled student who wants to pursue a post-secondary education. Ban Righ Summer Speaker Series, 32 Bader Lane presents Hungry for More: Emergency Food in Kingston. Every day in Kingston, hundreds turn to food banks and meal programs for help. These institutions are essential but they can’t address the underlying causes of poverty. How can we work together to leverage the human impulse for charity into social justice? Susan Belyea is the coordinator of Loving Spoonful and was the teaching assistant in a course on Global Food Security in the Department of Development Studies last term.  Loving Spoonful distributes fresh surplus food to meal programs and shelters in Kingston, coordinates the Grow a Row campaign, and works with other community groups on various food security initiatives in the city. The annual Skeleton Park Music Festival runs June 17, 18 and 19. The Skeleton Park Music Festival is a neighbourhood summer solstice celebration in McBurney Park, Kingston. The festival will provide a venue for family activities, local artisans, education on the history of the park, and local performing artists. With an emphasis on music, this event is an opportunity for the Kingston community to become better acquainted with their leading artists. Through this interaction the festival hopes to create a more supportive environment for the performing arts in the city at large. Come and join us for the 17th Annual Teddy Bear Picnic, sponsored by the Sunnyside Children's Foundation. Throughout the day (9:30am-3:00pm), a variety of exciting children's performers, including musicians and puppeteers, will provide non-stop entertainment. Clowns, storytellers and face painters will add to the fun. Many activities have been organized, such as a mini-train ride and horse-drawn wagon rides.  Not only can children bring their favourite stuffed animals to the Teddy Bear Hospital and the Teddy Bear Massage Therapist, but they can engage in a wide variety of games and crafts, such as painting, beading, cookie decorating and T-shirt painting. "G" (Glenn Williams) local radio personality and cheerleader for many community projects and events, G was diagnosed with ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease, those living with the disease become progressively paralyzed due to degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The Walk for ALS is a fundraising event for to support people living with ALS and relevant research and to draw awareness of this deadly disease that makes those it strikes unable to breathe or swallow. ALS has no known cure or effective treatment. Walk for ALS will take place Saturday, June 27. Registration: 8:30:00 AM, Start Time: 10:00:00 AM at Lake Ontario Park. www.als.ca.
