From potions, to amputations to x-ray therapy learn it all on a guided tour of The Museum of Health Care. Our guided tour offers visitors a detailed account of the history behind the artefacts on display in each of the Museum’s five onsite galleries: When Medicine Met Science: The Health Care Revolution of the 1800s, Potions, Pills, and Prescriptions: Remedies of 1900, Joint Ventures: Learning to Replace Human Joints, Electricity and The Invisible Ray, and For Service to Humanity: Nursing Education at Kingston General Hospital. Museum Interpreter for Summer 2008, Jon Hureau, affirmed that “It is important to realize that the evolution of health care has an impact on everyone. These tours provide a unique lens through which the public can explore the exciting and often surprising history of the field. The Museum of Health Care presents KGHistory for Kids! June 1st to August 30th. Suitable for ages 6-12, this 30-minute outdoor memory and mapping activity is a fun way for children to learn about the exciting history of Kingston General Hospital. This eye-opening scavenger hunt includes revelations of plagues, politicians, prisoners, doctors, new immigrants, a nobleman and nurses, and spans nearly 100 years! Combining education, entertainment and exercise, the activity takes place mostly outside, on the picturesque grounds of KGH. Children also peek inside some buildings of two National Historic Sites, including the first parliament building of the United Province of Canada and the only remaining Victorian-era operating ampitheatre in the entire country. Working from an activity sheet, kids test their visual observation and chart their course on a map.The activity begins at the Museum of Health Care in the Ann Baillie Building at 32 George Street. Come by and see what fantastic products and services this year’s participants of the Summer Company program have to offer! On June 5th between 9:30am and 3:00 pm Summer Company Students will be at 122 Princess St – beside the old Fabric Land location - to launch and showcase their businesses. Students will be there all day at their display booth to talk about their business and showcase their products and promotional material will be on hand. Some Summer Company students will continue to operate beyond the summer and many past students are still in business today and have grown! It’s a great learning experience for the students and an excellent way for them to build their resume and earn some money to cover tuition and books so stop by on June 5th and 6th and check it out.

Learn about both off-grid and on-grid renewable energy projects in this two-part workshop at Wintergreen Studios and the neighbouring Forest Farm. In the morning, Rena Upitis (Wintergreen Studios) will lead a guided tour through Wintergreen’s off-grid systems where we will explore energy sources and energy consumption. Discussion topics will include solar-powered electricity, solar domestic hot water, straw bale insulation, thermal mass, and living roofs. In the afternoon, David Hahn (Forest Farm) will introduce the opportunities of the Feed In Tariff (FIT) program of the Green Energy and Economy Act for generating additional farm income through generating and selling solar electricity. This talk will include a short walk next door for a tour of the Forest Farm 10 KW solar photovoltaic installation. The workshop begins at 10:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm.
